Paper wallpaper: Versatile classics for walls

If you want to buy paper based wallpaper, you are in good company: it is one of the most popular and most versatile wallpaper types. There are innumerable variations - white or black, plain or multicolored, smooth or embossed. The selection online is huge, the price most pleasing and you can apply them even as a layman quickly and with little effort.

And there is something else that speaks for the popularity of paper based wallpapers: their properties. Paper is a natural product and as such environmentally friendly, breathable, and perfect for a healthy indoor climate.

The weight of a role already says something about the quality of the wallpaper: High-quality paper wallpaper is heavier than cheaper ones. For the stable and heavy duplex variant, several layers of paper are joined together, and the surface is embossed.

How durable a particularly high-quality paper wallpaper is, you will also notice when you have to remove an old one from the wall: this is often impossible without soaking, scratching or perforating the wallpaper. When wallpapering, you use the classical technique: you paste the back of the wallpaper on the pasting table and then let it soak for five to fifteen minutes. Unlike non-woven wallpaper, a paper wallpaper stretches when the paste is being absorbed. The strip gets approximately one centimetre wider.

When drying on the wall, the wallpaper shrinks again. This so-called drying tension ensures that that wallpaper later sticks, bubble- and gap-free, tight to the wall. To paper the joins perfectly, you have to keep the same soaking time for every strip. This is important to avoid pattern shifts and unwanted irregularities. You do not need any expensive special paste and for tools and accessories you can use standard wallpapering equipment.
