Vinyl wallpaper - Properties and manufacturing

When you buy vinyl wallpaper, you opt for a durable, stylish, and proven wall covering and can choose from many patterns, colours and structures the most beautiful design for your home. Whichever way you prefer to live: Vinyl wallpapers are so versatile that they harmonize with classic country cottage style or retro style as well as with other concepts of interior design.

For the production of vinyl wallpapers, the base is made of paper or non-woven material which is coated with PVC (polyvinyl chloride or short PVC).

Vinyl wallpapers are usually printed using intaglio printing. With this technique, motifs and patterns can be printed in high resolution and photographically true. In modern rotogravure, a laser engraves the pattern onto the gravure cylinder. By printing multiple colours on top of each other, even the finest colour gradients and transitions can be achieved.

After printing, the surface of the vinyl wallpaper undergoes a thermoforming process. By this so-called embossing, a closed and stable vinyl layer is created from which you can remove dirt with a cloth or scrub brush quickly without moisture entering in the wallpaper or damaging the surface. This way, design and structure remain true, fresh, and representative even under heavy exposure.

Wallpapering vinyl wallpaper

Due to their properties, vinyl wallpapers are also very popular for kitchens and bathrooms. They prevent that moisture penetrates the wall and their surface dries quickly when you ventilate the area after showering or cooking.

If you want to hang a vinyl wallpaper, you only need a properly prepared surface, the usual tools and the adequate technique for the carrier material of your wallpaper. In order to ensure perfect wallpapering, remove old wallpaper completely from the wall. With lining paper you bring the base in top form.

Paper-based vinyl wallpapers are pasted just like conventional paper wallpaper. Leave them soaking and then hang them on the wall. For non-woven wallpapers with vinyl coating, paste the wall and put the wallpaper dry onto the glue layer. Maintaining a soaking time is not required. Note that you need a different adhesive for paper wallpapers than for non-woven wallpapers.

If you additionally want to use borders when wallpapering, you also need a special adhesive so that the narrow wallpaper sticks securely on the smooth surface. As a professional trick, you can first hang the border and then arrange the vinyl wallpaper edge to edge.
